Applications open for the microcredential “Soil Health in the Montado: Assessment, Indicators and Practices”

The University of Évora, within the framework of the SOS PRODEHESA MONTADO project, has opened applications for the microcredential “Soil Health in the Montado: Assessment, Indicators and Practices”, a specialised training course designed to strengthen the skills needed to assess, interpret and improve soil conditions in Montado and dehesa systems.

Soil health is essential to ensure the sustainability, resilience and proper functioning of these agro-silvo-pastoral systems. Soil plays a key role in fundamental processes such as nutrient cycling, water regulation and organic matter dynamics, meaning that its condition is closely linked to the management practices applied.

The microcredential combines conventional assessment methods with indicators that can be easily observed and measured in the field. This approach makes it possible to obtain a more complete picture of soil condition and to support the adoption of management practices that promote biodiversity, carbon sequestration and the economic viability of farms.

The main topics covered during the training include soil health assessment and diagnosis, the analysis of indicators related to soil structure and functioning, organic matter and carbon, nutrient cycling and biological activity, as well as their application to sustainable management practices.

The training is particularly aimed at farmers, farm managers, association technicians and agricultural advisory professionals, with the objective of strengthening their skills in the sustainable management of Montado and dehesa systems.

The microcredential has a duration of 8 weeks and 3 ECTS, will be taught in Portuguese, and will be delivered in a face-to-face format with tutoring. Classes will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 14:00 to 17:00, between 11 January and 3 March 2027. The first phase offers 25 places.

Applications open

The application period will be open from 8 to 19 October 2026. Results are expected to be published by 30 October, while enrolment will take place between 30 October and 2 November 2026. The tuition fee for students from European Union countries is €150.

This training provides an opportunity to deepen knowledge of soil as a key foundation for the sustainability of Montado and dehesa systems and to gain practical tools for its monitoring, assessment and management.
