On 29 April, livestock farmers from the south-western mountains of Badajoz and representatives of the SOS PRODEHESA MONTADO project consortium took part in a technical workshop held at the Monteporrino communal farm in the municipality of Salvaleón. The meeting provided a first-hand insight into the progress made in the pasture improvement strategies implemented on this pastureland participating in the project.

During the visit, the research team from the Extremadura Centre for Scientific and Technological Research (CICYTEX) presented the results obtained after implementing techniques adapted to the ecological conditions of the pasture ecosystem, with the aim of improving forage production, soil quality and resilience to climate change.

📈 One of the most noteworthy findings was the increase in biomass produced, up to four times higher than in traditionally managed natural pastures, without losing sight of the positive impact on biodiversity and carbon sequestration in the soil.

The participants, both technicians and livestock farmers, highly valued the practical usefulness of these techniques and their potential for replication in other areas of the dehesa and montado.

The conference was also an opportunity for the exchange of experiences between researchers and producers, promoting dialogue and knowledge transfer between science and practice.

The event is part of the actions planned by the European project SOS PRODEHESA MONTADO, funded by the INTERREG V-A Spain–Portugal Programme (POCTEP), which seeks to promote the sustainability, resilience and environmental and economic value of the agroforestry system of the dehesa and montado in the Iberian Peninsula.
